Here’s a fresh Apple rumor in the run-up to MacWorld: a TomTom GPS module for the iPhone. We just received this supposed photographic “evidence” of said device from a Dutch tipster. Our take? Might be, might not. TomTom is a Dutch company and a righteous, straight-talkin’ Dutchman would never tell such a fib, would he? On the other hand, that device is clearly not in a car heading to Rotterdam. Still, it could be a route demo and that stretch of highway (A13/E19) is a favorite for internal TomTom validation studies. Surely a move towards GPS is a logical next step for Apple — particularly after that little VW concept. And with Apple on the verge of opening the iPhone to third party developers, well, anything goes, eh?
Helio’s warm embrace of YouTube’s wide world of entertainment is nothing new, but it’s getting a whole heck of a lot warmer today with the release of an all-new YouTube app for the Ocean dual slider. Basically, if you can do it from YouTube’s desktop website, you can now do it through the Ocean — instant uploading, ratings, video replies, it’s all here. Not that it comes as a huge surprise given the wide array of devices it already supports, but according to The Register, Orb is apparently set to finally get official with its support of both the iPhone and the iPod touch “in the next few days.” As with other devices, that’ll let you get in a little place-shifting with the aid of the iPhone’s browser, including letting access your music collection via the Orb-powered version of Winamp. On the iPhone, you’ll also have the added benefit of being able to send links to songs in an SMS chat session. Of course, just ’cause it’s not official doesn’t mean you make use of Orb in its current state which, for all we know, could be exactly what’s in store when Orb does make things official.
As promised, Google released the SDK for the Android mobile phone platform today. There’s no actual phones running Android on the market yet, but the early release of the SDK means that as soon as you get your hands on an Android phone, there’s a good chance you’ll be able to slap some third party applications on there without having to wait for hackers to unlock anything.
In fact, Google is encouraging third party development by giving away $10 million in awards to individuals and companies that come up with useful applications for the new mobile platform.
Of course, cellphones rely on hardware and not just software to make your life easier. But it looks like Android supports a wide array of hardware, including touchscreen devices, VGA screens, and 3G wireless connections. There’s also support for 3D accelerated graphics, and MPEG-4, h.264, AAC, and MP3 audio and video files.
No surprises here, but the Pantech Duo (split-personality and all) has officially arrived in late October, just as we were led to believe. Ready to rock texters’ worlds on AT&T, the Duo does indeed boast Windows Mobile 6, a QWERTY keypad and a numeric ‘board for your convenience, UMTS / HSDPA compatibility and a 320 x 240 resolution display. The unit measures in at 4.02- x 1.97- x .83-inches, and if you dig what you’re seeing, it can be yours today for $199.99 if you’re cool with signing a two-year agreement.
Right on schedule, you’re looking at the just announced co-branded Skype phone: the 3 Skypephone. Sure, mobile Skype clients are already in worldwide use. This, however, marks the first time a carrier has fully embraced Skype which traditionally has been seen as a threat to carrier tariff schemes. Under 3’s plan, Skype VoIP calls and IMs are free to any other Skype user just as long as you’re under contract or top up your pay as your go account with at least £10 (about $21) each month. The £49 (about $101) 3G phone with 2 megapixel camera and microSD slot will be available in the UK on Friday; Australia, Austria, Denmark, Hong Kong, Italy, Ireland, Macau and Sweden sometime later in the year. According to reports out of India, Google is currently in talks with country’s first and third largest telecos, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Essar, concerning everyone’s favorite mobile rumor: the Google Phone. Based on information coming from Rediff’s India Abroad, an exclusive launch — happening in a highly questionable two weeks — is being discussed between the companies, and would tie into a simultaneous debut of the Gphone in both the US and Europe, coupled with announcements in India and other parts of the world. The only hurdle, they say, is approval from regulatory agencies (such as the FCC, we would assume). The report goes on to suggest that Google has plans to invest $7-8 billion in its telephony plot, though there has been practically zero confirmation from the company. When asked about the possibility of the Google mobile phone making an appearance soon, a spokesperson for the search-portal-giant said, “We don’t comment on market rumour or speculation. However, Google is committed to providing users with access to the world’s information, and mobile becomes more important to those efforts every day.” So, while you can never, truly rule out a sudden showing of the Gphone, definitely don’t go banking on it either.
Sure, we’ve seen a plethora of interactive billboards before, but Mark Ecko’s (credit to Benjamin Busse) latest eye-catcher could seriously make you miss your ride. This brilliantly designed ad sports an LCD that can be painted up by your Bluetooth cellphone, as it allows passers to use their mobile as a spray can to decorate the screen as they please. No word on whether this thing accepts multiple connections or not, but a tagging duel would be mighty fine entertainment whilst waiting on the next bus.
According to a Barron’s report published today, Deutsche Bank analyst Johnathan Goldberg has released a short note claiming that the Foleo — Palm’s much-derided quasi-laptop — is headed for production delays. Goldberg states in the note that “In a round of checks yesterday we learned that the Palm Foleo will be delayed,” and went on to say the snag is caused by “software bugs,” which prevent the system from syncing properly with “most models of the Treo.” Clearly not the news that Palm wants people to hear right now, with pressure already to-the-nines on the Foleo and its place (or lack thereof) in the market. With the recent addition of Elevation Partners to Palm’s board, the company is due to take on $400 million in new debt, but on a phone call to Barron’s later in the day, Goldberg said that “a leveraged re-cap is not going to help them.” Succinctly mirroring Engadget’s own feelings on the matter, the analyst noted that “There’s something wrong with the company,” and suggested Palm alleviate some of its problems by introducing “…new software,” and “…new form factors.” We couldn’t have put it better ourselves.
Although the most recent hunch about a handset release did indeed prove true, we’re not so sure about these HTC claims. DigiTimes has it that High Tech Computer is “expected to launch its second touchscreen-controlled smartphone supporting a 3.5G standard perhaps as soon as September,” and while it didn’t confirm, the site did insinuate that the mobile in question is the P5500 “Nike.” Additionally, the rumors suggested that the phone will be “built using a CPU from Samsung and chipsets from Qualcomm,” while also supporting W-CDMA. Of note, these same “sources” claimed that a device codenamed Vogue would be hitting North, Central, and South American shores, and we certainly can’t find any room to argue with that.
