SanDisk was trumpeting its 8GB microSDHC cards all the way back in June, but it’s taken until now for the company to ship the little buggers — but we’re also getting an 8GB Memory Stick Micro (also known as M2) version as a reward for our patience. The 8GB SDHC card will set you back $139, while the M2 stick is $149, and both should be in stores worldwide now, according to SanDisk.

If you’re keeping abreast of the Windows Home Server proceedings (and we suspect you are) then you’re probably somewhat familiar with the HP EX470 / EX475. Furthermore, If you’ve been eyeing the two, drive-filled towers and been hoping to know when you might get your hands on them, you may be in luck. According to reports from retailers like Amazon and PCMall, the $599 EX470 (clocking in at 500GB) and and $749 EX475 (1TB) will begin shipping on September 15th. As you’ll recall, the servers rock 1.8GHz AMD Semprons and contain four drive bays, plus tout four USB ports and one eSATA port — for additional external expansion. As the supposed launch date for WHS draws ever nearer (or further… it’s hard to tell) it’s at least nice to know that we’ll have some options when it does eventually land.

LaCie is apparently looking to grab video editors’ attention with the introduction of its latest RAID tower, which comes stocked with 5TB of storage and is scalable to up to 20TB for HD multi-stream support. The 5TB Biggest S2S five-disk RAID boasts a 3Gbit/sec eSATA interface, direct eSATA-to-SATA connection, burst rates of over 200MB/sec, and the ability to link up with three other S2S units on the eSATA PCI-X / ExpressCard to achieve the aforementioned 20TB solution. Furthermore, the disks are hot-swappable and the tower is hot-pluggable, and it can even be setup to beam out email alerts in the event of disk failure. The 5TB S2S is available now for $3,699 with a PCI-X card, or you can toss in an extra Benjamin and go for the PCI-E bundle.

NewerTech is introducing its miniStack NAS enclosure, which can be pre-configured with as much as 750GB of storage, and should fit quite well above or below your mini. The box sports Ethernet / USB 2.0 ports, PC and Mac support, Ximeta’s NDAS 2011 network chipset, LED status lights, auto power on / off, and “intelligent thermal monitoring for minimal fan power consumption.” For those interested in adding their own HDD, the device itself can be snagged for $79.99, while ordering with a hard drive already included will run you up to $329.99 depending on capacity.

Just in case 1.5TB wasn’t enough for you, Western Digital’s now gone and topped off its entire range of dual-drive My Book external hard drives with a full 2TB of storage. That includes the My Book World Edition II, the My Book Pro Edition II, and My Book Premium Edition II models, each of which appear to be otherwise unchanged from their previous incarnations. Of course, all that storage excess doesn’t exactly come cheap, with the 2TB versions of the drives running between $749 and $799 depending on the model.

Considering that solid state discs — although still noticeably more expensive that traditional HDDs — are quickly plummeting in price, it’s about time a brief roundup was executed in order to pinpoint which SSD was best for you. Granted, CustomPC’s evaluation only included a handful of options, but the in-depth testing process found a few glaring losers and even fewer runaway winners. As expected, reviewers used a number of read / write testing applications to judge the speed differences and real-world performance increases on seven SSDs ranging from 8GB to 32GB in size. Coming out on top was Samsung’s 32GB drive, which proved both “quick and silent” in their testing; however, the 18GB STEC Zeus-IOPS proved the hands-down winner in terms of sheer speed. ‘Course, we highly doubt many of you will be snagging the latter after witnessing its £7,050 ($14,461) pricetag, but a number of slightly slower performers including PQI’s Turbo Plus 2.5 could very well provide the boost you desire without (totally) breaking the bank.
